College Counseling

Planning for college starts in middle school as we guide and encourage students to explore different subjects and extracurricular activities. If a student finds what they are passionate about and gifted in they will have a better understanding of who they are leading into high school. Throughout the four years of high school students will benefit from:

Mandatory counselor/parent/student college meetings in 9th and 12th grade
Unlimited individual counselor meetings upon request
Access to Naviance-online college research tool and YouScience-aptitude/interest assessment
Class meetings covering topics such as: Finding the “right fit” school, training on Naviance and YouScience tools, course scheduling, SAT/ACT planning, step-by-step application support during 12th grade
College Admissions Bootcamp (summer before 12th grade)
Opportunities for MostPrep SAT/ACT preparation classes for 11th and 12th grade
100+ university representative visits each year
Multiple college campus tour trips
Our college counselors emphasize academics, community service, extra/co-curricular activities and encourage the well-rounded student. Faith Lutheran is active with the WACAC and NACAC college networks and in planning annual college fairs for Faith students and Vegas community.

Q. How much of this process is my counselor able to help me with?

Your counselor can help with just about anything. However, it must be understood that all the work ultimately needs to be done and submitted by the student. In general the college application process involves, filling out the actual application, requesting letters of recommendation, writing application essays, requesting copies of tests scores and transcripts, filling out housing applications, filling out scholarship applications, and filling out financial aid information forms like the FAFSA and/or any individual institutional financial forms. There is a financial aid/FAFSA night during each fall semester, during which parents are free to ask any financial aid questions they have.
Q. Should I take the ACT?

We recommend that you take both the SAT and the ACT because some students do better on one than they do on the other and a higher score can qualify you for college admission and/or various scholarships.
Q. Should I take an SAT/ACT prep. class?

If you have the means, we highly recommend a preparation class. Faith Lutheran, in cooperation with MostPrep, offers courses for Faith juniors and seniors at a cost of $600. Students can sign up by clicking on this link and filling out the form.
Q. When should I take the SAT?

We recommend that students take the ACT and SAT during the spring of their junior year. Seniors who have not yet taken the SAT or ACT should take each as soon as possible.
Q. When should I apply for college?

Students should apply for college during the fall of their senior year. Each college/university has a different application deadline, but most are between November 30th and March 1st. You do not want to turn in your applications late, so seniors should check the deadlines of the schools to which they are applying and get started on the process as soon as possible.
Q. What is the difference between the two tests?

It’s complicated, but the basic difference is the ACT has a science section while the SAT does not. The SAT is a reasoning test in addition to a test of a student's abilities in reading, math and writing while the ACT is a test of a students abilities in reading, English, math and science without the added reasoning element.
Q. How do I qualify for the Millennium Scholarship?

You must graduate with a 3.25 or score at least a 21 composite on the ACT or a 1070 combined Math and Reading on the SAT. If you do, Faith will send your information to the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office and you will qualify to receive funds up to $10,000 if you attend college or university in Nevada.
Q. What do I need to be admitted to UNLV or UNR?

Both universities will require a 3.0 or better GPA in the student’s core classes or a combined SAT Math and Reading score of 1120 or an ACT composite score of 22.
